Calvin Coolidge was administered the oath of office by his father, John Coolidge, who was a justice of the peace in Plymouth, Vermont. Vice President Coolidge was staying at his father's home in Plymouth Vermont when he learned of President Harding's death. He was sworn in as President at 2:30 a.m. August 3, 1923. After being sworn in, President Coolidge returned to bed. He slept soundly and left for Washington early the next day. The validity of the oath was later questioned, and so President Coolidge took a second oath eighteen days later in Washington D.C.
